Our little bubba is already 2 months old! The past 8+ weeks seems like a blur to me. It's so true how fast our babies grow & change. Carrying the car seat has become quite a challenge with his steady weight gain. As he fills out, his neck is becoming stronger, and there is more 'bak' (flesh in hokkien) for me to cuddle & squeeze. It feels really nice now to hold him close to my body.Lucas has finally made contact with his play mobile in his crib. He has started to stare, giggle and babble at the mobile. Before he was born, I had no clue what toys would amuse a baby. Shopping for toys was a huge challenge for me because I cannot imagine how a baby/kiddo would be interested in a squeaky toy or rattle. Why would a baby be intrigued by some moving stuff animals above his head playing the same sound over and over? But apparently, these toys do have the ability to connect with our babies.
I went on a rampage through all the toys (from family & friends) I had kept in Lucas' room. I need to experiment if any of the rattles, jiggly, squeaky toys would amuse Lucas.

Viola also talks to her stuff animal, but she has not really made contact with her toy around her carseat yet.
I am a total goon when it comes to baby toys. I don't even have anything around the carseat! Not sure how heavy Lucas is now, probably around 13-15lbs? Will know on Tues - he is getting his jabs!
Ohhhh! He's a mini sumo wrestler! What a big boy! And indeed what a smile :) Bean, I think Lucas has your smile; he looks more like Edwin when he'snot smiling (see photos of him being passed around to be cuddled by the ladies). Absolutely swamped with work, no time to update my blog :( happy cny in advance! we're running away to cameron highlands for peace, quiet and some cool air - after a flooding monsoon period the weather has progressed to Very Hot & Dry which makes my throat infection think it's found a permanent home in my tonsils.
Suggest getting a good gym mat which comes with lots of toys which can be changed as Lucas gets older.
Sophie loved her Tiny Love "Total Playground" Gymini. She played with it since she was about 3 months old and is now 9 months and still likes using the playmat part (though we took off the arches quite long ago). Most of my friends who bought the Tiny Love gym mat found that it is great value for money from 2 months to 6 months. Don't buy those which don't "grow" with your baby because you won't get much mileage.
Have fun! Baby toys are an investment for the parents as well, because you can surf the net/blog/do something else when bubs entertains himself!!

thanks for the tip, S*! I do have the tiny love gym mat! but lucas has not really fallen in love with it yet! we'll see! hopefully! I was wondering if a playpen worked for any of u?

We were just as lost initially, it's like you said those toys for 0-3 months look just so lame (especially the rattles)! But once you and baby start on them, it opens up new discoveries and you begin to see things through his eyes/mind ... and you find yourself poring through all those tacky claims made by the mfgr (which you used to brush aside as marketing talk) and start believing in them ...they do stimulate baby in his acquiring of new skills - like colours (for his sight and mind development), sound (for his hearing), grasping (gross motor skills), etc.
CY started with his Tiny Love mobile as well, then his rattles, his Fisher Price bouncing cradle, his swing (he loved the music), Tiny Love gym mat ... but the play pen was just a white elephant :-)
Agree with Meng Wai - don't bother with the play pen. Sophie will play inside for 5 minutes and then rattle the bars like a caged animal and howl to come out. Instead, just go about baby-proofing your home. More time-consuming but easier in the long run.
